Open multiple items side-by-side without leaving Eden. Panes let you watch a video while taking notes, compare documents, or reference research while working on a canvas — all in one view.
Opening a Pane
There are three ways to open an item in a pane:
Option/Alt + Click
Hold Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) and click any item in your sidebar or folder view. It opens in a new pane.
Right-Click Menu
Right-click any item
Select
Open in Pane
Hover Icon
Hover over an item in the sidebar
Click the Open in Pane icon that appears
Arranging Panes
Once you have multiple panes open, you can arrange them however you like:
Drag to Reposition
Click and drag a pane's header to move it. Drop it:
Left/right of another pane — Side-by-side layout
Above/below another pane — Stacked layout
On another pane — Replaces the pane
Resize Panes
Drag the borders between panes to make one larger or smaller.
How Many Panes?
You can open as many panes as you want. Common setups:
Panes | Good For |
|---|---|
2 | Video + Notes, Document comparison |
3 | Research + Canvas + Notes |
4+ | Complex workflows with multiple references (large screen recommended |
The more panes you open, the smaller each one gets. Find the balance that works for your screen size and task.
Use Cases
Video + Notes
Watch a video in one pane, write notes in another. No switching tabs.
Document Comparison
Open two PDFs or notes side-by-side to compare content.
Research + Canvas
Reference source materials while building out your canvas.
Full Research Setup
Multiple references plus your working document.
Tips for Working with Panes
Start with Two
Begin with a simple two-pane setup. Add more only if needed.
Put Main Work on the Right
If you're writing, keep your document on the right (where your focus naturally lands). Put references on the left.
Use Keyboard Shortcuts
Option/Alt + Click is the fastest way to open panes. Get comfortable with it.
Close What You're Not Using
Unused panes take up space and add visual noise. Close them when you're done.
Combine with Canvas
A Canvas in one pane gives you AI + connected content, while another pane shows the item you're working on.
Panes vs. Canvas
Both let you see multiple things at once. Here's when to use each:
Use Panes When... | Use Canvas When... |
|---|---|
You need to see full items side-by-side | You need to connect items to AI |
You're comparing or referencing | You're building a workflow |
Simple viewing setup | Complex project with many items |
Quick, temporary layout | Persistent workspace you'll return to |
Pro tip: Use both together — open your Canvas in one pane and a reference item in another.
Common Questions
Do panes save their layout?
Pane layouts are temporary for your current session. When you close Eden or navigate away, the layout resets.
Can I have different panes on different monitors?
Eden is a single-window app. Panes exist within that window. For true multi-monitor, open Eden in multiple browser tabs/windows.
Does opening panes use more resources?
Each open pane loads its content. Many panes with video may slow things down. Close what you're not actively using.
Can I open the same item in two panes?
Yes. You can open the same note or video in multiple panes if needed.
Is there a way to save pane layouts?
Not currently. For persistent layouts, use Canvas — items you place there stay where you put them.
