How to get the transcript of any TikTok or Instagram Reel

Paste a link, get the script: how to transcribe TikToks and Reels free, even without captions, and why creators study competitors' scripts as text.

Short video is written before it is filmed, which means the script is the asset, and the fastest way to study one is as text. But TikTok and Instagram give you no transcript button, and most transcript tools only speak YouTube. Here is how to get the full transcript of any public TikTok or Reel from just its link, free, even when the creator never added captions, and what to actually do with the script once you have it.

Full disclosure: we make Eden, and the free transcript tools below are ours.

Why you can't just copy the captions

Neither app helps you here. TikTok shows auto-captions on screen but offers no way to select or export them; Instagram is the same, and plenty of Reels have no captions at all. Screen-recording and retyping is the workflow this article exists to kill.

The other trap is tool mismatch: the well-known transcript tools (Tactiq, DownSub, Kome) are YouTube caption scrapers and don't accept TikTok or Instagram links at all. What ranks for "TikTok transcript" instead is a churn of interchangeable micro-tools with unstated limits. So here's the direct route.

Get a TikTok transcript

Paste the video's link into the free TikTok transcript generator. Full tiktok.com links work, and so do the short vm.tiktok.com links the app's share button copies, so the flow from phone to transcript is: Share, Copy link, paste. The transcript appears in seconds, ready to read, copy, or download; no signup, no watermark, and a fair-use limit you won't hit by being a person.

Because the transcription comes from the video's audio, not from on-screen captions, it works on videos whose creators never captioned them. The honest limit: a video with no speech (music or sounds only) has nothing to transcribe.

Get an Instagram Reel transcript

Same flow, different door: the free Instagram Reel transcript generator takes any public instagram.com/reel/ or instagram.com/p/ link, including links copied from the app's share sheet. Audio-based like the TikTok tool, so uncaptioned Reels transcribe too.

Any public video works, yours or anyone's. (YouTube videos and Shorts have their own tool, and all three accept each other's links, so one tab covers whatever you paste.)

What creators actually do with the scripts

  • Reverse-engineer hooks. The first two lines of a viral video are the whole game. As text, ten competitors' hooks sit side by side and the pattern jumps out: the question they open with, where they withhold the payoff, how early the promise lands. That's the move behind studying what works in your niche: name the transferable pattern, not the video.
  • Build a script swipe file. A folder of transcribed outliers, annotated with why each one worked, beats any hook-template thread. Our swipe file guide covers the system.
  • Repurpose your own videos. A 60-second Reel script is an X post, a LinkedIn post, and a newsletter section already drafted; transcribing your back catalog is the cheapest content pipeline you own.
  • Feed an AI assistant. AI can read but can't watch. Transcripts are how a video becomes something you can ask questions about, summarize, or draft from.

If you do this weekly, the paste-one-link-at-a-time loop is the bottleneck. Inside Eden, every video you save (TikToks, Reels, YouTube, and more) arrives in your library with its transcript attached automatically, searchable alongside everything else you've saved, and the chat drafts posts from any of it in your voice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get the transcript of a TikTok video?

Copy the video's link with the Share button, paste it into the TikTok transcript generator, and the transcript appears in seconds. Free, no signup.

Does it work on videos without captions?

Yes, usually. The transcript comes from the audio, so clear speech transcribes with or without captions. Music-only videos have no speech to transcribe.

Can I transcribe someone else's Reel or TikTok?

Yes, any public video. Studying competitors' scripts is the main reason creators do this; the videos stay theirs, the patterns you learn are yours.

Is there a way to transcribe in bulk?

The free tools take one link at a time. For volume, save the videos to Eden, where every saved video gets its transcript attached automatically and your whole library becomes searchable text.
