Discord alternatives for a paid community in 2026
Discord is free and great at chat, but paid servers hit limits: US-only subscriptions, no checkout, no courses. 6 alternatives with live prices and fees.
Discord is free, fast, and the best group chat most people have used. For a paid community, it has real gaps. Discord's own Server Subscriptions are only for owners in the US, and Discord keeps 10%. There's no checkout page outside Discord, no courses, and good answers scroll away in chat. If you want to keep Discord, add Whop to sell access. If you want to move, pick Eden for chat plus a store and email, Circle for a polished community, or Skool for the lowest fee.
Full disclosure: we make Eden, one of the options below. Prices were checked on each company's site on October 8, 2026.
What Discord does well
Be honest about this first, because it's why most paid communities start there.
- It's free. Unlimited members, channels, voice, and video.
- Chat is excellent. Channels, threads, reactions, voice rooms, and screen share.
- Your members already have it. No new app, no new login.
- The phone apps are good. Fast, stable, and familiar.
If your community is free, or it's a side room for a game, a podcast, or a product, Discord is hard to beat.
Where Discord falls short for a paid community
| Gap | What happens on Discord |
|---|---|
| Getting paid | Server Subscriptions are only for owners with US banking. Discord keeps 10%. Elsewhere you need a bot or a tool like Whop. |
| A checkout page | People subscribe inside Discord. There's no sales page that also sells your course or coaching. |
| Answers that last | Forum channels exist, but most talk happens in chat, and old answers get buried. Members ask the same thing again. |
| Profiles | Members show up with their Discord name and avatar, set for every server they're in. |
| Courses and resources | None built in. Lessons live somewhere else. |
| None. You can't email members or leads from Discord. | |
| Noise | Busy servers ping a lot. New members face a wall of channels with no first step. |

100 members at $50 a month. Platform plus fees, with Stripe at about 2.9% + 30¢ where it's charged on top.
| Setup | Monthly cost |
|---|---|
| Discord Server Subscriptions | $500, plus processing |

| Skool Pro | $274 |
| Circle Professional (yearly) | $364 |

On fees alone, keeping Discord and selling access through Whop is the cheapest paid setup. Eden costs more per sale. What it adds is a store, courses, email, and a forum (the Library) in the same place.
1. Eden: best if you want chat plus a store and email
Eden's community chat is built to feel like Telegram: channels that show their last message, threads with an inbox, voice notes, photo grids, @mention chips, typing dots, and forwarding. Next to it sit the Library, a forum for guides, breakdowns, and wins with categories and pinned posts, and events that sync to members' calendars.
What Discord doesn't give you:
- A checkout that works anywhere Stripe does. A community is a product in your store, with its own page, monthly or yearly price, or a one-time price.
- A Library that keeps answers. Hosts and moderators can save a chat message as a Library post. Replies can be marked as the best answer. Search covers chat and the Library.
- Badges that sort what matters. A red number for mentions, replies, and host posts, and a gray one for plain new messages. Members pin their own channels to the top.
- Profiles built for this. Photo, what they're working on, a short bio, and links, one profile across every community they're in.
- Courses and email in the same place. Include a course free for members, and start an email sequence when someone joins.
- Quiet by default. Phone notifications start on Smart: one heads-up when people start talking, then at most one update every 3 hours until they open it.
Price: Starter $29 a month (1 community), Pro $79 (3), Max $199 (unlimited). 5% per sale, or 2% on Max, plus Stripe. No member caps.
Where it falls short: no voice rooms that stay open, no private messages between members, and no bots inside the chat. Members use the Eden app. Eden can't move your Discord members over, so you share a join link.
Choose Eden if you want to sell the community next to courses and coaching, and you want answers that last. See Communities and Eden vs Discord.
2. Discord + Whop: best for keeping Discord
Whop sells access to your Discord server and lets members pay with cards from almost anywhere. Your community stays where it is.
Price: no monthly plan. 2.7% + 30¢ per payment, plus 1.5% for international cards, 1% for currency conversion, and $2.50 for a next-day US bank payout.
Choose Whop if your members love Discord and you only need a way to get paid. See Eden vs Whop.
3. Circle: best for a polished community
Circle has spaces, chat, courses, events, and live rooms in one clean design. It's calmer than Discord and easier for people who don't use Discord daily.
Price: Professional $89 a month billed yearly plus 2%. See Circle pricing.
Choose Circle if your members aren't gamers and want something tidier. See Eden vs Circle.
4. Skool: best for the lowest fee on a big group
Skool is one feed plus a classroom and a calendar. It's the opposite of Discord: no channels, no group chat, very little noise.
Price: Hobby $9 plus 10%, Pro $99 plus 2.9% + 30¢ with card fees included. See Skool pricing.
Choose Skool if you want courses with a simple feed and the lowest fee. See Eden vs Skool.
5. Heartbeat: closest to Discord's layout
Heartbeat uses channels, threads, and events, so it feels familiar if you're coming from Discord, with courses and documents added.
Price: Build $49 a month (5%), Grow $149 (2.5%), Scale $849 (1.25%).
Choose Heartbeat if you like Discord's channels and want built-in payments.
6. Telegram: best for chat on phones
Telegram is free and fast, and it's huge outside the US. You can charge with Telegram Stars or a bot like InviteMember. See how to run a paid Telegram group.
Choose Telegram if your audience already uses it daily.
