Sorting a board

The four sort modes available now, what each one is good for, and which features are still coming.

·3 min read

A board is always a sorted grid. The sort menu in the top right lets you pick how items line up. Custom is the default. Three other modes are available, three more are coming.

The four available sort modes

Custom

The default. Items appear in the order you put them in. Drag any item to a new position and the new order is saved for everyone with access to the board.

Custom is the right pick when:

  • The order itself carries meaning (a sequence of drafts, a curated reading list)
  • You want a board to read top-to-bottom like a document
  • You are iterating on a layout

The drag handle is the entire item card. Hold, drag, release.

Name

Sorts items alphabetically by their title. A to Z by default. Click the direction toggle to reverse to Z to A.

Use Name when:

  • The board contains items whose titles you remember and want to scan
  • You are looking for one specific item out of many

Items without titles (notes that contain only body text, for example) sort to the bottom of the list.

Item type

Groups items by what they are. YouTube videos sit together, X posts sit together, notes sit together, and so on.

Use Item type when:

  • You want to see all the videos on a research board at once
  • You are pruning a board and want to compare like with like

The order within each type group falls back to the most recent activity.

Date created

Sorts items by when they were saved to the board. Newest first by default. Click the direction toggle to flip to oldest first.

Use Date created when:

  • You want to see what landed on the board most recently
  • You are reviewing a swipe file you have been adding to over months

Date created is fixed when an item is saved. Editing the item later does not change it.

Sort modes coming soon

Three more sort modes are visible in the menu and will turn on in an upcoming release:

  • Date modified, ordered by the last time an item was changed
  • Date added, useful when you want a separate signal from "created" (an item created elsewhere and added to this board later)
  • Date last opened, ordered by the last time you opened the item

If you tap one of these today, the board falls back to Custom and the menu shows a "Coming soon" tag.

Sort and sections

Sorting and sections work together. Switching to a section chip filters the board to that section, and the active sort still applies. So you can flip between "Drafts, sorted by name" and "Drafts, sorted by date created" without changing the section.
