Ask new members join questions

Ask a few pick-only questions when people join. Each answer can give a tag that opens channels.

On the web, open your community's product, go to the Community step, open the Joining tab, and fill in Join questions. Turn on Ask new members a few questions and click Save. New members answer right after your rules, and their answers can give them tags.

Add your questions

    Open the Joining tab

    Open the community's product in your store, click Community in the steps, then open the Joining tab.

    Write a question and its choices

    Under Join questions, type the question. Pick Pick one or Pick any, and turn Required on or off. Add up to 8 choices, each with an optional emoji.

    Give tags

    Next to a choice, pick a tag in the list, or pick New tag… to make one. If that tag opens a channel, the editor shows Opens #channel under the choice.

    Turn it on and save

    Turn on Ask new members a few questions and click Save. Click See what members see to check it first.

You can have up to 5 questions. Answers are picks only, no typed answers. For long answers, use an application on the same tab.

What members see

  • A step called A few quick questions, after the rules and before Set up your profile.
  • They can read everything right away. Posting waits until they answer the required questions.
  • If they tap Not now, every message box shows a button like Answer 2 quick questions to start chatting.
  • When every question is optional, they get Skip instead, and nothing is held.
  • After Continue, channels their tags open show up right away.
  • They can change answers any time from the ⋯ menu, under Your answers. A changed answer takes away only the tags that answer gave.
  • It works the same in the Eden app on iPhone and Android. DMs are never held.

To send a DM when someone gets a tag, use auto messages.

You, your admins, and your moderators are never asked. You see each member's picks in Admin → Members, under their name.

Ask people who are already in

Turning questions on only asks people who join from then on. To ask everyone, click Ask current members too, then Ask everyone. Each member sees the questions on their next open, starting from their last answers.

Turn the questions off

Turn off Ask new members a few questions and click Save. Nobody is asked or held. Tags already given stay, and your questions stay saved for later.
