Send auto messages to members

Send a message from your community or a host when someone joins or gets a tag, right away or after a wait.

·2 min read

On the web, open your community's product, go to the Community step, open the Messages tab, and click Add a welcome message under Auto messages. Edit the words, then turn it on. Set Send as to The community so replies go to your shared Inbox, not your own DMs.

Set up a welcome DM

  1. 01

    Open the Messages tab

Open the community's product in your store, click Community in the steps, then open the Messages tab.

  2. 02

    Add the welcome message

Under Auto messages, click Add a welcome message. It's added paused, with sample words.

  3. 03

    Write it

Change the message and click Save. {first_name} becomes their first name. Links work.

  4. 04

    Turn it on

Flip the switch to On. It sends to people who join from then on.

Send one when someone gets a tag

Click Add an auto message, set When to Someone gets a tag, and pick the tag. Pair it with join questions: someone picks "Become an affiliate", gets the Affiliate tag, the affiliate channel opens, and your DM explains the next step.

You can have up to 10 auto messages per community.

What members get

  • From The community: a message from your community's name and icon, in a private chat with your team at the top of their Messages. Replies land in your Inbox. With Replies off they can read it but not answer.
  • From a host: a normal DM from that person. Replies go to that host's own Messages.
  • Each auto message reaches a person once, ever, even if they leave and come back.
  • No more than 3 a day from one community. Extras wait for the next day.
  • Two at once go out a minute apart.

People who were already in when you turned a message on don't get it.

Why some say "Skipped"

Each card shows Sent and Skipped counts. Hover Skipped to see why: they left, they no longer match the tags, they blocked the sender, they don't take messages, or the message was paused while it waited.

If the host a message comes from stops being a host, the message pauses. Pick someone else under Send as and it starts again, sending what was waiting. Messages sent as The community never pause this way.
