Messages and group chats
Message one person in private, or start a group chat with up to 10 people, from any community you're in.
Open Messages in a community, click +, and pick a person. For a group, click New group next to it, pick 2 to 9 people, and click Create group.
Only the people in a chat can see it. Hosts can't read your messages, except one that someone reports to them.
Message someone
- 01
Open Messages
On the web, click Messages on the left. On a phone, tap the Messages tab.
- 02
Pick a person
Click +, or type a name in Search people. You can also click Message Maya on someone's profile card.
- 03
Say hi
Type and send. Photos, voice notes, links, and reactions work like the community chat.
You have one chat per person, and it shows in every community you share with them.
Forward a message to a chat
Pick Forward on a channel message. Your chats and groups are listed under Messages, below the channels. Type a name to find someone you haven't messaged yet. Add your own words in Add a message if you want.
- The chat's rules still count. A request can only carry text, so you can't forward a photo or link to someone until they accept.
- Messages in a chat can't be forwarded out of it.
Start a group chat
- 01
Click New group
It sits next to + at the top of Messages.
- 02
Pick people
Tick 2 to 9 people. A group holds 10 with you. Add a name if you like.
- 03
Create it
Click Create group. Until someone names it, the group shows first names, like "Maya, Jesse, Tom".
To change the group, click its name at the top for Group info:
- Anyone in it can rename it or click Add people.
- Only the person who started it can Remove someone.
- Anyone can click Leave group.
- New people see the messages from before they joined.
Who you can message
The community's owner decides. In the product editor's Community step, open the Messages tab. Under Member messages:
| Switch | What it allows |
|---|---|
| Members can message each other | Members start chats with other members |
| Members can message hosts | Members start chats with the owner, admins, and moderators |
Both are off to start. Hosts can always message members.
You can add anyone you could message to a group, from any community you share with them.
Requests
When a member messages another member for the first time, it arrives as a request. You see it under Requests at the top of Messages.
- Click Accept to chat, or Decline to hide it. They aren't told.
- Until you accept, they can send one text message.
- A group you were added to by a member works the same way. You see "Maya added you" and no messages until you accept.
- Messages from hosts skip the request.
Control who can reach you
Click the gear at the top of Messages. Under Who can message me, pick:
- Anyone the community allows: the owner's switches decide.
- Only hosts: owners, admins, and moderators of your communities.
- No one new: chats you already have keep working.
To block someone, open the ⋯ on your chat with them and click Block, or tick Block them too when you report a message. A block works across all of Eden. In a group, you stop seeing their messages. Unblock people in the same settings window.
Pin and mute chats
- Pin: right-click a chat (long-press on a phone) and pick Pin to top. You can pin up to 10.
- Mute: open the ⋯ in a chat and pick Mute.
