Import your Notion workspace

Nothing leaves your computer until you start the import. Eden reads the export where it is, shows you a summary, and only then uploads what you are about to import.

Export from Notion first

   Open the export

   In Notion, open Settings → Export content and click Export all workspace content. To bring over a single page instead, open its ••• menu and choose Export.

   Choose Markdown & CSV

   Pick Markdown & CSV as the format (not HTML or PDF), keep Include subpages on, and leave Create folders for subpages on. Notion emails you a download link for big workspaces; save the zip somewhere you can find it. You do not need to unzip it.

What you get

• One Eden note per Notion page. Headings, lists, to-dos, tables, code blocks, quotes, and links all come across. Notes land in your Library only. No boards are created.
• One Eden table per Notion database. Every column comes over with a type Eden works out from the values: checkboxes, numbers, dates, links, single and multi-select choices, and plain text. Rows keep the order they had in Notion.
• Rows with a page become notes too. A database row that has its own page content becomes a real note that also sits in the table, so you can open it from the table. Rows with no page content stay lightweight rows and do not count toward your item limit.
• Relations become Library item links. A relation column whose entries point at imported pages becomes a Library item column in Eden. Relations with several entries, or pointing at rows without a page, are kept as text.
• Parent pages become tags. Every page gets a tag for each page above it in Notion, so a whole section of your old workspace is one click away in the Library. A database's Tags column also tags the row's note.
• Links between pages are kept. A link to another exported page becomes a link to that note in Eden. A link to a database becomes a live table embed when it sits on its own line. Links to pages that are not in the export turn into plain text rather than broken links.
• Images and files ride along. Images are uploaded and shown in place. PDFs and other files are uploaded and linked from the note.

Run the import

   Go to Settings → Import

   Click Import from Notion on the Notion card.

   Choose your export

   Click Choose the zip and pick the file Notion gave you. You can also drag the zip onto the window, or choose the unzipped folder.

   Check the summary

   Eden shows how many pages, databases, tags, and attachments it found, which databases will become tables and how many rows each has, and which tags it will create or reuse. On a repeat import it also says how many items are new, changed, or already up to date.

   Import

   Click Import. Keep the window open while it runs; pages import first, then tables. When it finishes you see every tag with a count, and you can jump straight to the Library.

Running it again

Importing is safe to repeat. Notion puts a hidden id on every page and database, and Eden remembers items by that id, so renaming or moving a page in Notion never creates a duplicate. Running the import again:

• adds pages and databases that are new in the export,
• updates pages you changed in Notion, as long as you have not edited them in Eden since the last import,
• updates tables whose CSV changed: new columns are added and rows are refreshed from Notion,
• skips everything that has not changed, and
• keeps any note you edited in Eden exactly as it is. Your edits always win.

If you delete an imported note or table in Eden, the next import brings it back. To keep something out for good, leave it out of the export.

Finding imported items

In the Library, open the Filter menu and choose Notion under Imports to see only imported notes and tables, or pick one of the imported tags. Every imported item also carries Notion as its source.

Removing everything

Changed your mind? On the Notion card in Settings → Import, click Remove imported items. Every imported note and table moves to Trash, where you can restore it for 30 days. The tags stay, since you may have used them on other items by then.

Good to know

• Spacing looks different. Notion keeps empty lines as spacing; Eden's editor spaces paragraphs itself, so those blank lines are dropped on import. Blank lines inside code blocks are kept.
• Callouts and toggles are flattened. A callout becomes a quote block, and a toggle becomes a bold line with its content below it.
• Cells you changed in Eden. When a database changes in Notion, its rows are refreshed from the export, so cell edits you made in Eden to those rows are replaced. Notes are never overwritten this way.
• Wide databases are trimmed. Eden tables hold up to 30 columns; extra columns are left out and the summary says so.
• Very large exports. The import handles up to 5,000 pages and 5,000 rows per database at a time. Export a few top-level pages at a time for a bigger workspace.
• Free plan item cap. Imported notes, tables, and rows that become notes count toward the Free plan's item limit. Rows without page content do not. The summary warns you when the export will not fit, and the import stops when the limit is reached; upgrade to continue.
