How Eden assigns sources

What a source is

A source is the origin of an item: a creator on a platform, a newsletter or feed you follow, a book or podcast from your highlights, or a website. The Sources view in your Library (the third icon in the view switcher, next to Grid and List) groups your items by these origins so you can browse everything from one place at a time.

You don't create sources directly. Eden derives them from your items, so a source appears when the first item points at it and disappears on its own once nothing does.

How Eden picks a source

When an item arrives, Eden checks in this order:

1. A source you set yourself. If you used Edit source on the item, your choice wins over everything below.
2. Social posts group under their creator on that platform, like a YouTube channel or an X account.
3. Highlights group under the book, article, or podcast they came from, matched by title and author so the same book merges across Readwise, Kindle, and Snipd.
4. Feed articles group under the newsletter or RSS feed you follow, not the sites the articles link out to.
5. Everything else with a link groups under its website.

Notes you write yourself and uploads without a link have no origin, so they don't appear in the Sources view unless you give them a source with Edit source.

Why one creator can appear as several sources

Sources follow where the content lives, not who made it. If someone publishes a Substack newsletter and also posts YouTube videos, their articles file under the newsletter and their videos file under their YouTube channel. Same person, two sources.

Each source mirrors one real place you save from. When you want one person's work together, merge their sources.

Merging sources

Hover over a source in the Sources view and click the merge icon to pick another source that belongs to the same creator. The two become one combined source: their items show together, the busier side's name and picture represent the pair, and future saves from either place land on the combined source automatically.

Eden also watches for likely matches. When two of your sources share a website, a handle (like the "dankoe" of both @dankoe and dankoe.substack.com), or a name, a Same creator? card appears above the grid with a one-click Merge. Eden never merges on its own; you always confirm, and dismissing a suggestion means it won't be offered again.

To undo a merge, hover over the combined source, click the merge icon, and choose Unmerge all, or remove a single member from the list. You can also rename the combined source there.

Editing an item's source

Right-click any item in the Library and choose Edit source, or click the Source card when an item is open. The editor opens showing the item's current source.

• Pick from "Your sources" to file the item onto that exact source, the same tile you see in the Sources view.
• Type a name to set the source by hand. If the name exactly matches one of your existing sources, the item files under that source. A new name creates a new source.

Finding something you just read

The Sources view is for browsing one origin at a time. To get back to a specific article, Recents in the filter row shows what you touched most recently, and Library search finds items by keyword or meaning. See filtering and browsing your Library for the full filter row.
