Comments on notes and items

Leave threaded comments on any item in your Library, highlight a passage in a note to comment on it, pin comments to a board, and let readers of a shared note or board comment without giving them edit access.

Every item in Eden can carry a conversation. Comment on a note, a PDF, an image, a saved post, or a board, reply in threads, and resolve what's done. In a note you can also highlight a passage and comment on exactly that text. And a shared note can be opened up so readers comment without being able to edit.

Comments are for feedback, questions, and notes-to-self that don't belong in the item itself. They live beside the item, not inside it, so a comment never changes your content, and a phone or an AI edit never wipes one out.

Comment on any item

  1. 01

    Open the item

Open it from a board or from the Library. Comments live in the same panel for every kind of item.

  2. 02

Click the Comments icon in the top bar

A panel opens with the item's threads. The number on the icon is how many are still open.

  3. 03

    Write and post

Type in the box at the bottom and press Enter. Shift+Enter adds a line break.

Hover a thread to reply, or to mark it resolved. Resolved threads move into a collapsed section at the bottom so a busy item stays readable. Anyone in the workspace can resolve or reopen a thread. You can edit or delete your own comments; the workspace owner can delete anyone's.

Comment on a passage in a note

In a note, select some text and choose Add comment from the little toolbar that appears. The passage gets a highlight and the thread shows the quoted text at the top. Click a highlight to jump to its thread in the panel.

The highlight follows the text as the note is edited. If the passage is deleted or reworded, the thread keeps its quote and stays in the panel as a comment on text that's gone, rather than silently attaching to something else.

Comment on a table cell

In a table, right-click any cell and choose Comment. A small box opens right under the cell, the same as when you comment on a passage in a note. Type, press Enter, and the cell gets a small speech bubble with a count in its corner. Click the bubble to open the thread in the comments panel, where it shows the cell's text at the top. Resolving the thread clears the marker.

Comment on a board

A board has one comments panel for everything said about it. Click the speech-bubble button in the board's bottom-right corner to open it. The number on the button is how many threads are still open.

The panel groups threads three ways:

  • This board: general comments about the whole board, plus any pins placed on the freeform canvas. Type in the box at the bottom to leave a general comment.
  • One group per item: threads left on the notes, tables, posts, PDFs and other items placed on the board, headed by the item's title. Click the title, or the "On ..." label above a thread, to open that item on its comments.
  • Resolved: collapsed at the bottom, the same as on a single item.

Cards with open threads show a small bubble with a count in their top-right corner in every view. Right-click a card and choose Comment to open it straight on its comments panel.

Pin a comment on a freeform board

On a freeform board you can drop a comment on a spot, the way you would in a design tool. Open the + menu in the bottom toolbar and choose Comment (or press Shift+C), then click anywhere on the canvas. Type your comment and press Enter. A small bubble appears at that spot; click it to read or reply, drag it to move it.

Drop a pin on a card and it travels with the card when the card moves. Pins live on the freeform view; in grid and list view the same threads show in the panel, and a pin dropped on a card counts toward that card's bubble. From the panel, Show on board pans the freeform canvas to a pin.

Let readers of a shared note comment

A note shared as "Anyone with the link can view" is read-only for everyone who opens it. If you want feedback on it, switch it to comment-only:

  1. 01

Open the note and click Share

The share panel opens with the link options.

  2. 02

Choose Anyone with the link can comment

Under General access, pick it in place of "can view". The link is copied for you.

  3. 03

    Send the link

Readers see the note with a Comments button in the top right. They can select text to comment on a passage, or leave a general comment from the panel. They still can't change a word of the note.

Readers need to be signed in to Eden to comment, so every comment carries a real name. A free account is enough; the page offers Sign in to comment and brings them straight back to the note. Anyone can still read the note without an account, just like a view-only link.

Comments from readers show up in the note's comments panel for you and your workspace, the same as your own. Workspace owners also get a summary by email (and a push on the phone app) when someone outside the workspace comments: one message per note, about half an hour after the first new comment, covering everything left in that time, so a reader who leaves ten comments in a sitting doesn't mean ten emails. A reader can reply in threads, resolve threads they started, and edit or delete their own comments, and nothing else.

To stop taking comments, switch the note back to Anyone with the link can view or Private. Existing comments stay on the note for your workspace. There's also a step up from comment-only, Anyone with the link can edit, for a note you're co-writing with people outside your workspace; see sharing a single item.

Let readers of a shared board comment

Boards can be shared the same way. In the board's Share menu, choose Anyone can comment in place of "Anyone can view". Readers with the link see the board read-only with the comments button in the bottom-right corner. Signed in, they can leave general comments, drop pins on a freeform board, and comment on any note, table, post or file on the board, including highlighting a passage in a note or commenting on a table cell. They still cannot move, add, or change anything.

As with notes, readers need to be signed in to comment; a free account is enough, and the page brings them straight back to the board. Everyone else can still read the board without an account. Workspace owners get the same summary email and push when someone outside the workspace comments.

Where comments don't go

  • Comments never appear in the note's text, in exports, in what the AI reads, or on your phone's copy of the note. They're a layer beside the content.
  • Duplicating a note or a board doesn't copy its comments.
  • Comment-only sharing works for notes, tables and boards; edit sharing for notes and tables. Other items can be shared as view-only or by inviting specific people; see sharing a single item.
