How to find outlier TikToks in your niche
A step-by-step for using Eden to find the TikToks that genuinely outperformed in your niche, plus the variables that drive most TikTok outliers.
TikTok rewards outliers harder than any other platform. The algorithm pushes a video that breaks past a creator's typical performance to a much wider audience, often within hours. Those are the viral TikToks worth studying. Not the household-name accounts whose every video gets millions of views by default.
This article covers the TikTok-specific filters that work, and the four variables that move most outlier multipliers on the platform.
The four-step workflow
- 01
Filter Discover to TikTok
Open Discover. In the Platforms dropdown, deselect everything except TikTok. The feed now shows only TikTok outliers.
- 02
Click the pillar you write in
Use the chip strip above the search input to narrow the feed to one pillar. If the pillar you want is not pinned yet, click + Add to add it.
- 03
Bump the outlier minimum
Discover already floors at 5×. TikTok rewards big outliers more than other platforms, so the higher presets pay off harder here. Open the Outlier filter and set it to 10× or more for studying. 20× or more is where the platform's biggest viral wins live.
- 04
Save the strongest videos to a board
Eden saves the creator, the caption, the thumbnail, and the outlier multiplier on the card. If a particular sound looks like part of why the video hit, take a quick note when you save. TikTok sounds are a discoverability lever the card cannot fully capture. Read boards as swipe files for the discipline that keeps the board useful.
If you want to study creators at your own audience size, set the Audience filter to the follower range that matches yours. The breakouts that work for a 5K-to-20K account are different shapes than the ones that work for a 5M account.
Studying one specific TikTok creator
If you have a creator in mind, the workflow is different. Inside Discover, click the Creators tab and search the creator by name or handle. Their profile shows every video Eden has indexed for them, with a sort dropdown:
- Recent. Newest videos first.
- Top liked. Weighted engagement (likes plus comments plus shares, with views as a tiebreaker).
- Top viewed. Sorted purely by play count.
- Most shared. TikTok-specific. The green share button is the strongest off-platform spread signal.
- Top outlier. Videos that overperformed for that creator, ranked by the multiplier.
For studying, Top outlier is the one you want. Most shared is the one to scan second. Share count tracks how often a video left the platform, which is one of the cleanest signals that a video hit something an audience wanted to send to a friend.
What drives most TikTok outliers
Hook (first 2 seconds)
The most important variable on TikTok by a wide margin. The platform has a watch-time gate in the first two seconds that decides whether the video gets pushed further. Outlier TikToks almost always do something deliberate in those two seconds.
Common hook shapes that show up across niches:
- A counterintuitive claim spoken to camera
- A visual that does not make immediate sense, paid off later in the video
- A direct address to the viewer ("If you do this, stop")
- The result first, then how
Save 30 outlier hooks. Watch them back to back. You will spot two or three shapes you can adapt to your niche.
Pacing
Outlier TikToks tend to be tighter than a creator's median videos. Faster cuts. Less setup. The information density per second is higher. This matters even on slower educational accounts where you might think pacing does not apply.
If your typical TikTok is 60 seconds and the outliers in your niche are 25, that is a signal worth taking seriously.
Sound
Sound is a discoverability lever on TikTok specifically. A video using a sound that the algorithm is currently pushing benefits from a tailwind that the same video on a different sound would not get.
When you save a TikTok, take a quick note on the sound the creator used. When you scan a swipe-file board later, watching which sounds repeat across outliers tells you which ones the algorithm is currently amplifying. Those are the ones worth experimenting with on your own.
Caption
Less load-bearing than on X or LinkedIn, but still worth studying. Outlier captions on TikTok tend to do one of three jobs:
- Reinforce the hook (a one-line restatement that gets reread)
- Add a payoff that the video alone did not deliver
- Set up a question the comments answer (driving engagement)
A caption that just describes the video usually does not. The good ones do work.
How TikTok differs from YouTube
If you are coming to TikTok from a YouTube workflow, two adjustments are worth making:
- Volume matters less. A YouTube creator might post once a week and study deeply. TikTok rewards more attempts. Outliers come from iterating on the hook, not from polishing one video.
- The lesson is the variable, not the video. A YouTube outlier teaches you a title and a topic angle. A TikTok outlier teaches you a hook shape and a pacing rhythm. The reusable unit is smaller.
