How to find outlier X posts in your niche
A step-by-step for using Eden to find the X posts that genuinely outperformed in your niche, plus what to study in an outlier tweet.
X (formerly Twitter) is a hook-driven platform. A viral X post almost always lives or dies on its first line. The rest of the post pays the line off, and the outlier multiplier surfaces these breakouts regardless of follower count.
This article covers using Eden to find outlier X posts in your niche, and the three variables that move most of them.
The four-step workflow
- 01
Filter Discover to X
Open Discover. In the Platforms dropdown, deselect everything except X. The feed now shows only X outliers.
- 02
Click the pillar you write in
Use the chip strip above the search input to narrow the feed to one pillar. If the pillar you want is not pinned yet, click + Add to add it.
- 03
Bump the outlier minimum
Discover already floors at 5×. For studying, open the Outlier filter and set it to 10× or more. On X this surfaces the posts where an account that typically lands 50 likes hit 500. That gap is where the lesson lives.
- 04
Save the strongest posts to a board
Eden saves the post text, the creator, and the outlier multiplier as a card. Build a swipe file you read alongside your own drafting. Read boards as swipe files for the discipline that keeps it useful.
If you want to study posts from accounts at your own audience size, set the Audience filter to the follower range that matches yours. The shapes that work for a 5K-follower account are different from the shapes that work at 500K, and seeing the right tier is what makes the swipe file useful.
Studying one specific X account
If you have a writer in mind, the workflow is different. Inside Discover, click the Creators tab and search them by handle or display name. Their profile shows every post Eden has indexed for them, with a sort dropdown:
- Recent. Newest posts first.
- Top liked. Weighted engagement (likes plus replies plus reposts, with views as a tiebreaker).
- Top viewed. Sorted purely by total view count.
- Top outlier. Posts that overperformed for that account, ranked by the multiplier.
For studying, Top outlier is the one you want. Top viewed mostly tells you which posts had the most followers see them, which on a fast-growing account collapses into "their most recent posts." Top outlier tells you which posts beat the account's own typical performance.
The three variables that drive X outliers
The first line
The single most important variable on X. A timeline scrolls fast, and the first line is the only part guaranteed to be read. Outlier posts almost always have a first line that does one of these jobs:
- Makes a specific, falsifiable claim ("I lost 20 pounds in 90 days. Here is what changed.")
- Names a tension the reader is feeling, in their words rather than yours.
- Promises a payoff and pays it off in the line below ("The one mistake every junior PM makes:").
- States a counterintuitive observation in the smallest possible number of words.
Save 30 outlier first lines. Scan them as a list. The shapes start to repeat.
A few shapes the platform has overused into invisibility: the negation-reframe (everyone says one thing, then a corrective second sentence), the artificial-scenario opener, anything that starts with the word "PSA". Strong outlier writers reach for something more specific.
Structure
The shape of the post itself, after the hook. Three patterns recur:
- The list. A header line, then 5 to 10 short numbered items, then a one-line wrap. Performs especially well when the items are concrete actions or data points.
- The one-line essay. Six to eight sentences of plain text where every sentence earns the next one. Higher ceiling, harder to write.
- The setup-and-payoff. First line is the setup. Second line is the payoff. The whole post is rarely longer than four lines. The reader's reward is the payoff itself.
A strong post almost always commits to one of these. Posts that mix shapes tend to underperform their author's median.
Specificity
Outlier posts on X are almost always more specific than their author's median posts. Specific numbers, specific timelines, specific names, specific stakes. Generic posts about productivity perform like generic posts about productivity. A post that names the exact mistake, exact tool, or exact outcome travels further.
Specificity is the easiest variable to change in your own drafting. Open an outlier swipe file, count the specific nouns, and rewrite your draft to match the density.
What to ignore
A few things that look load-bearing but usually are not:
- Length. Both 4-line and 40-line posts can be outliers. Shape matters more than count.
- Hashtags. They do not move the needle on X. Outlier posts rarely use them.
- Hour of day. The replies to "what's the best time to post on X" are noise. Outliers travel because of what they say, not when they were said.
