Email marketing

Start a newsletter

Run a free newsletter from your store, with its own signup page, a public archive, and issues you email to subscribers.

·4 min read

Open Your store → Email → Newsletter, then click Start your newsletter. People sign up on its own page, and you send issues with New issue. You can also get here from New product → Newsletter. Needs Starter or above.

Set it up

  1. 01

    Start it

In Email → Newsletter, click Start your newsletter. You don't need to turn on email marketing yet. Eden asks the first time you email an issue.

  2. 02

Name it and pick its address

Fill in Name, Web address, and What it's about. The address is yourstore.eden.so/newsletter unless you change it.

  3. 03

Pick who's on it to start

Under Who's on it to start, pick Everyone on my list, People with these tags, or Nobody yet. People who unsubscribed are never added.

  4. 04

    Choose free or paid

Leave Charge for some issues? off for a free newsletter. Turn it on to add a paid tier now. See Sell a paid newsletter. Click Start newsletter.

Then open Settings to add a cover image, What readers get, and How often. Click Save changes.

The How your newsletter works card at the top shows how signups, the paid tier, and issues fit together, with a button for each next step. Click the X to hide it.

Your newsletter page

Click View page at the top of the tab. Visitors can:

  • Sign up with just their email. No account needed.
  • Read past issues in the archive, newest first.
  • Follow it by RSS: add /feed.xml to the page's address.

To show a signup box and your latest issues on your store page, add a Newsletter block. See Your creator page.

Write and send an issue

  1. Click New issue. It opens the email editor, already set to Newsletter issue.
  2. Write it, then click Next.
  3. Check Who gets it, pick Now or Pick a time, and send.

The first time you send, Eden asks you to turn on email marketing and what to do when your included sends run out. Nothing extra is charged unless you choose it. Sending by email opens after your first paid month on Eden.

Every emailed issue is also saved to your archive. Editing it later changes the archive copy only.

Add issues without emailing anyone

On Issues, click Add issue:

ChoiceWhat it does
Write an issueA blank issue to write here
From a documentCopies a document from your workspace into a new issue
From a past broadcastTurns an email you already sent into an issue
Upload a documentA .md file becomes a new issue

New issues are drafts only you see. Click Publish to archive to post one, or Email it to subscribers… to send it.

Free and paid issues

With a paid tier, each issue is Free or Paid. Free issues go to everyone. Paid issues go in full to paid subscribers, and free readers get the top part with a button to subscribe. See Sell a paid newsletter.

Who's subscribed

Free subscribers are contacts with the tag Newsletter: and your newsletter's name. Anything that gives that tag adds people: your store page signup box, forms, imports, and Zapier.

  • To add people already on your list, open Subscribers. Under Add people from your list, pick Everyone on my list or People with tags, then click Add to newsletter.
  • To take signups on your own website, click Get the signup form on Subscribers. See Add a signup form to your website.
  • To remove someone, take the tag off in Audience → Subscribers.

Send a welcome email

In Settings → Welcome email, write it like any other email: type / for headings, images, and buttons. The Send a welcome email switch turns it on or off. Click Save changes.

  • It goes once to people who join on their own: your newsletter page, a signup box, a form, or Zapier.
  • People you add from your list don't get it.
  • It only sends once email marketing is on.

How people leave

The unsubscribe link in an issue takes them off that newsletter only. Your other emails keep coming, and the page offers a button to stop those too. Someone who unsubscribes from your other emails can choose to keep getting just the newsletter.

Use it with Substack

Eden works alongside Substack. A Newsletter block on your store page can show your latest Substack posts, and signups can go to Substack through Integrations → Who goes where. If your free list lives on Substack, turn off Free signups in Settings. See Connect your email list.
