How to build an ad swipe file (that you actually use)

A working ad swipe file in five steps: what to save, the context every ad needs to keep, how to organize it, and the weekly habit that makes it compound.

An ad swipe file is a private collection of proven ads, kept as raw material for making your own. Copywriters have built them for a century; the modern problem is that the ad platforms actively fight you, since ads vanish the moment campaigns end and the libraries have no save button. Here is how to build one that survives: what to save, the context each save must keep, how to organize it, and the ten-minute habit that turns a folder into taste.

Full disclosure: we make Eden, whose ad research feed and boards are built for exactly this. The method works whatever you use.

Why most ad swipe files die

Be honest about where your inspiration lives right now: a camera roll full of screenshots, a Slack channel called #ad-inspo, maybe a Notion page with nine entries. They all fail the same way:

  • The save loses its context. A screenshot does not know how long the ad ran, how many variations the brand tested, or what the landing page was. Six months later it is just a picture.
  • The link rots. Ad Library links die when the campaign ends, and the media dies with them. Half of a year-old link list is dead.
  • Nothing resurfaces at writing time. A swipe file matters exactly once: when you sit down to make the next ad. If it is not next to where you work, it is decoration.

The fixes are structural, not motivational. Build the file so that saving is one click, context rides along automatically, and the file lives where you create.

Step 1: decide what earns a save

A swipe file of everything is a swipe file of nothing. Save an ad only when it carries evidence:

  • It has run for 60+ days. On Meta, longevity is the performance data; nobody pays to keep a losing ad alive. The "Started running" date is on every ad in the Facebook Ad Library.
  • The brand keeps duplicating it. A high "ads use this creative" count means the brand trusts it with real budget.
  • It has real numbers. TikTok's Creative Center shows CTR, views, and retention curves on its top ads; anything you save from there is pre-verified.
  • It stopped your scroll and you can say why. The weakest signal of the four, so pair it with a note about the mechanic (the hook, the format, the offer), not just the vibe.

Step 2: capture with context, in one motion

Whatever tool you use, the save must keep four things: the creative itself (a permanent copy, not a link), the run dates, the copy and CTA, and the brand. If your capture method loses any of these, upgrade the method before growing the file.

In Eden this is the default: every ad card in the ads feed carries its run time, variation count, placements, copy, and brand page, and saving it to a board stores a permanent copy of the media, video included. Ads you find in the wild come in the same way, since pasting any Ad Library link into Eden resolves it into a saved card. If you are using folders and screenshots instead, our guide on saving ads from the Facebook Ad Library covers the manual routes and their trade-offs.

Step 3: organize by job, not by brand

Brand folders feel natural and go stale fast, because you shop for a mechanic, not a company, when you sit down to write. Organize by the job each save teaches:

  • Hooks: the first three seconds or the headline that stopped you.
  • Offers: how brands frame the deal (trial, guarantee, bundle, quiz, discount structure).
  • Formats: UGC testimonial, founder-to-camera, us-vs-them static, carousel demo, before/after.
  • Proof: how social proof, reviews, and specifics are staged in your niche.
  • Landing pages: where the click goes; the ad is half the argument.

Five buckets is plenty. In Eden, one board with sections does this; add a note to each save naming the mechanic so future-you knows why it is there.

Step 4: feed it deliberately, not just from your feed

Ads that reach your feed are targeted at you, which biases the file toward your own demographics. Add a deliberate weekly sweep:

  1. Ten minutes in your niche's ads sorted by longest running: the proven layer.
  2. Five minutes on one competitor's brand page (or Ad Library page) to catch their new tests.
  3. Five minutes outside your niche entirely. The best hooks migrate across industries, and the ones from elsewhere are the ones your audience has not seen yet.

Our competitor ad audit guide turns the second item into a repeatable monthly process.

Step 5: the ten-minute habit that makes it compound

Once a week, open the file and do three things: delete anything you no longer rate, write one line on the newest saves naming the transferable pattern, and make one thing using one saved mechanic. A brief, a hook rewrite, a test ad, anything. A swipe file used weekly compounds into taste; a swipe file only added to compounds into clutter.

The making step is where tool distance hurts most. In Eden, any saved ad boosts into a chat that already has its creative, copy, and run history loaded: reverse-engineer why it works, generate an ad brief for your product, or draft variations of its hook, then the draft lives next to the research that produced it.

Frequently asked questions

What should go in an ad swipe file?

Ads with evidence behind them: long-running Meta ads, heavily duplicated creatives, TikTok top ads with strong CTR, plus the landing pages they click to. Save across niches; a supplement brand's hook structure often transfers perfectly to SaaS.

How big should an ad swipe file be?

Fifty saves you review beat five thousand you do not. Prune monthly. The file's value is the pattern density, not the count.

Yes. The ad libraries are public transparency data and studying them is their intended use. Copying an ad outright is a different matter, both legally and strategically; swipe the mechanic, write your own execution.

What is the best tool for an ad swipe file?

Anything that keeps permanent media copies with context and sits near your writing. We compared the category honestly, including where our own tool falls short, in best ad swipe file tools.

The fastest start: create a free Eden account, open the ads feed, sort your niche by longest running, and save the first three ads that teach you something. That is a swipe file with evidence in it, ten minutes in.
