Meta Ad Library vs TikTok ad libraries: which to use for ad research

Meta shows every ad but no metrics. TikTok shows real metrics but only a curated sample. When to use each for competitor research, and how to combine them.

The two free ad research tools every marketer starts with are built on opposite philosophies. Meta's Ad Library is a census: every active ad from every advertiser, with almost no performance data. TikTok's Creative Center is a highlight reel: a curated sample of winners with real CTR, views, and retention curves attached. Knowing which question each one answers is the difference between research and scrolling.

Full disclosure: we make Eden, which combines both sources into one ad research feed. The comparison below is about the free tools themselves.

The one-paragraph answer

Use Meta's Ad Library when your question is about a brand: what is this competitor running, what offer do they lead with, which creatives have they kept alive for months. Use TikTok Creative Center when your question is about craft: what hooks, formats, and copy are winning in my niche right now, with numbers to prove it. They are complements, not competitors, and a serious research habit uses both.

What each one actually is

Meta Ad Library (guide here) exists because of transparency law. It indexes every active ad on Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Threads, searchable by advertiser or keyword. It hides performance almost entirely; the workaround is reading longevity (old ads are profitable ads) and variation counts (duplicated creatives are trusted creatives). In the EU view it also shows real reach numbers.

TikTok splits the job in two. Creative Center Top Ads (guide here) is a curated gallery of high-performing auction ads with real metrics: CTR, views, likes, and second-by-second retention curves. The separate Commercial Content Library is TikTok's legal-transparency answer to Meta's library, searchable by advertiser but limited to ads shown in the EEA, UK, and Switzerland, with no performance data.

Head to head

Coverage. Meta wins by a mile. Every advertiser, every active ad, worldwide. TikTok's Top Ads is a sample that advertisers can opt out of, and its transparency library only covers Europe.

Performance data. TikTok wins by a mile. Real CTR and retention curves versus Meta's nothing. Meta's longevity signal is a good proxy, but TikTok hands you the actual numbers.

Competitor research. Meta, clearly. Type a brand, see everything they run. On TikTok there is no way to enumerate a US advertiser's ads at all.

Creative inspiration. TikTok, clearly. Every example in Top Ads is pre-verified as a winner, so your study time is never wasted on ads that quietly failed.

Historical depth. Neither. Meta drops most commercial ads once they stop running; TikTok rotates Top Ads continuously. Both tools assume you will look things up live, which is exactly wrong for how swipe files work. Whatever you find, save it somewhere you control the same day.

Copy research. TikTok edges it with Keyword Insights, which shows which phrases appear in high-CTR ads. Meta's keyword search shows you who uses a phrase but nothing about whether it works.

The workflow that combines them

  1. Map the brands on Meta. Audit your five closest competitors in the Ad Library. Identify their long-running ads and their most-duplicated creatives. Now you know what the market's proven offers and formats are.
  2. Learn the craft on TikTok. Study your niche's Top Ads sorted by CTR. Read the retention curves. Now you know how winning creative is built this quarter: hooks, pacing, native feel.
  3. Cross-reference. The gold is where they overlap: a competitor whose Meta ads have run for months, using a hook mechanic that also dominates TikTok's Top Ads, is showing you a validated angle across two platforms. That is the pattern worth adapting.
  4. Save everything as you go. Both libraries forget. Your swipe file should not.

Where Eden fits

Eden's ad research feed removes the two-tab shuffle. It tracks hundreds of brands' Meta ads and TikTok's top ads in one feed, ranks Meta ads by the longevity and variation signals (and shows the ingredients on the card), keeps TikTok's real metrics attached, and lets you save any ad to a board with a permanent media copy. Brand pages give you the per-advertiser view, and pasting a Meta Ad Library link resolves it into a saved card. Browsing is free: create an account and open Discover.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for e-commerce research?

Both, in sequence. Meta for offer and competitor intelligence (e-commerce brands live on Meta, and longevity exposes their winners), TikTok for creative direction, since e-commerce categories are heavily represented in Top Ads.

Is there a Google equivalent?

Yes, the Google Ads Transparency Center covers search, display, and YouTube ads by advertiser, with no performance data. It rounds out the census side. Our competitor ads guide covers it alongside LinkedIn's ad library.

Can I see TikTok ads for a specific US brand?

Officially, no. The Commercial Content Library only covers Europe, and Top Ads is not searchable by advertiser. If the brand advertises in the EU, search them there.

Do either of these show ad spend?

Meta shows spend ranges for political and issue ads only. TikTok shows none. For commercial ads, longevity and duplication remain the best free proxies for budget.
