Using sections to organize a board

Sections solve a specific problem. A board has gotten long and you want to see one slice of it without splitting it apart.

When to use sections

A long board is fine. Sometimes it is the right shape, especially when you want a chat with the whole board to see every item at once. Sections never lock you out of that view either. The "All" chip stays at the top of the board no matter how many sections you add, and clicking it shows every item regardless of which section it belongs to.

Sections become useful when:

• The board contains items at different stages (capture, draft, ready)
• The board contains items of different kinds (hooks, outlines, sources)
• You want to flip between filtered views without switching boards

If the answer is "I want a separate board for each chunk," split into separate boards instead and group them in a space. Separate boards isolate items completely. Sections keep them together.

Adding the first section

A board starts with no sections. The chip bar only appears once you create one.

   Open the section menu

   Next to the board title, click the small "+" popover. The menu opens with a "New section" option.

   Name the section

   A short label works best. "Drafts", "Sources", "Done". Sections render as filter chips, so the label has to read at a glance.

   Save

   The chip bar appears under the board title with two chips: "All" and your new section.

The "All" chip is permanent. It shows every item on the board regardless of section. The other chips filter to a single section each.

Moving items into sections

Two ways to move an item into a section:

• Drag the item onto the section's chip.
• Right-click the item, pick "Move to section", and choose the section.

The right-click option is faster when you are organizing a lot of items at once.

An item belongs to one section at a time. Moving it into a new section moves it out of the previous one. To take an item out of a section without putting it in another, drag it onto the "All" chip.

Renaming and reordering

Right-click any chip in the bar:

• "Rename" lets you change the label.
• "Delete" removes the section. The items that were in it stay on the board, just no longer assigned to any section.
• Drag a chip left or right to reorder. The "All" chip stays anchored on the left.

Filtering vs deleting

A common confusion worth flagging:

This means you can use sections like temporary working views without worrying that an unfinished filter is hiding anything. The "All" chip always shows the full board.

Sections vs separate boards

A quick comparison:

• A section keeps items inside one board. The chat reads every item on the board and recognizes which section each one belongs to, so you can ask it to draft from one section without losing the rest. Sort applies across every section.
• A separate board moves items onto their own surface. Chat is scoped to that board. Sort applies only to its items. Group related boards into a space in the sidebar so they stay together.

Use sections when the items are part of one project that benefits from being processed together. Use separate boards when the items deserve their own context.
