A red number means someone needs you. A gray dot means there are new messages. To change how a community pings you, open it, click or tap ⋯ at the top, then Notifications.

What the red number and gray dot mean

SignalMeansCounts
Red numberSomeone needs youMentions (a host's @everyone too), replies to you, thread replies, replies and mentions on posts, host posts in host-only channels, new events, and event reminders.
Gray dotThere's new stuffNew messages in channels you can see. No number.

Hosts and admins also get "4 new members joined. Say hi." at most once a day.

Everything clears as soon as you read it, on every device. Opening a channel counts as reading it, so its count clears right away.

Where you see them

WhereWhat shows
Cards in Home → Your communitiesThe red number, or a gray dot
Each channel in the listHow many messages you haven't read: red if any need you
The bell in a communityHow many things need you. Red on the web, blue on phones.
Your other communities' icons (web)The red number, or a gray dot, in the icon bar on the left
Your phone's app iconThe red number. On Android, some phones show a dot instead.
The browser tab"(3)" in front of the title and a red dot on the Eden icon
The Mac app's dockThe red number

Your phone's icon, the tab, and the dock only show the red number. Plain chatter never puts a number on your phone.

  • Tap a notification or a row in the bell. Eden opens that exact message and flashes it.
  • Click or tap the bell to see everything that needs you. Mark all read clears it all.
  • A red New messages line shows where you left off. It stays until you leave the channel.
  • With a lot to catch up on, the channel opens at your first unread message. Tap Jump to latest to go to the bottom.

Change or mute a whole community

Open the community, then ⋯ → Notifications.

LevelWhat pings your phone
SmartMentions, replies, the host's messages, and a heads-up when people are talking. The default.
All messagesEvery message, grouped into one notification.
Mentions onlyOnly when someone mentions you, replies to you, or posts an announcement or event.
OffNo notifications from this community.

To mute it, click Mute this community on the web and pick how long. On a phone, pick a time under Mute. You see "Muted for 3 hours" until it ends. Tap Unmute to end it early.

Get desktop notifications

On the web or in the Mac app, open ⋯ → Notifications and turn on Desktop notifications. Your browser or computer asks for permission once.

  • You only get one when Eden isn't the window you're using.
  • In a browser, Eden has to be open in a tab. Click the notification to open the message.
  • After your first message in a community, a tip says "Get a ping when someone mentions you." Click Turn on to do the same thing.

Turn sounds on or off

While a community is open, Eden plays a short pop when something needs you, like a mention or a reply. It stays quiet on Home and the rest of the app, and never plays for the channel you're looking at.

  • Turn it off with Sounds in ⋯ → Notifications. One switch covers every community.
  • On a phone, a notification that shows while Eden is open also pops.
  • On a phone, the pop follows your silent mode.

Only one device rings

If you're using Eden on your computer, your phone stays quiet. If someone mentions you and you haven't read it after 2 minutes, your phone still gets it.

While you have a community open on any device, you don't get pinged about general chat there. Mentions and replies still come through.

See who's here

At the top of the community, "12 here now" shows how many people had it open in the last few minutes, with a few of their faces. It hides when fewer than 2 people are there.
