How to create a lead magnet (15 ideas that work for creators)
What a lead magnet is, 15 lead magnet ideas for creators, how to pick one that leads to your paid product, and how to build, deliver, and follow up in a weekend.
A lead magnet is a free thing you give away in exchange for an email address. To create one, pick the first step of the paid product you already sell (or plan to sell), turn it into something a reader can use in under 15 minutes (a checklist, template, short lesson, or small AI tool), put it on a simple page with one email box, deliver it right away, and follow up with a few emails that lead to the paid version. You can build a good one in a weekend.
This guide is for creators who want an email list that turns into sales, not just a bigger number. Full disclosure: we make Eden, a creator workspace with a store where you can give away free products. The method works with any tool. Eden details were checked against our own help center in September 2026.
What a lead magnet is (and what it isn't)
A lead magnet trades something useful for an email address. The reader gets a quick win. You get permission to email them.
It is not "subscribe to my newsletter." That asks people to sign up for more email, which most people already have too much of. A lead magnet asks them to sign up for a result: a finished plan, a working template, a fixed problem.
The best lead magnets share three traits:
- Fast. Readers can use it in 15 minutes or less.
- Specific. It solves one problem for one kind of person.
- Connected. It is the first step of something you sell.
That last one matters most. A free guide on productivity will grow a list. A free guide on "the 3 emails to send after your first 100 subscribers" grows a list of people who might buy your newsletter course.
15 lead magnet ideas for creators
| Idea | What it is | Works best if you sell |
|---|---|---|
| Checklist | The steps to do one thing, in order | Courses, coaching |

| Swipe file | A collection of examples that worked | Courses, memberships |
| Mini course | 3 to 5 short lessons, by email or video | Full courses |
| Free lesson | One real lesson from your paid course | Courses, cohorts |
| Email challenge | One small task a day for 5 to 7 days | Courses, coaching, memberships |
| Quiz or self-assessment | Questions that tell them where they stand | Coaching, courses |
| Free AI tool | A small AI that does one task in your method | Custom AI products, courses |
| Script or prompt pack | Word-for-word lines they can use today | Courses, templates |
| Short guide or playbook | 5 to 10 pages on one problem | Ebooks, courses |
| Workbook or worksheet | Questions that walk them through a decision | Coaching, courses |
| Resource list | The tools you use and why | Courses, memberships |
| Recorded workshop | A 30 to 45 minute teaching session | Courses, cohorts, coaching |
| Case study breakdown | How you or a client got one result, step by step | Coaching, done-with-you offers |
| Planner or tracker | A sheet to plan or log one habit or project | Templates, courses |
Some quick notes on the ones that do well for creators:
- Checklists and templates are the easiest to make and the easiest to use. Start here if you've never made one.
- Free lessons double as a preview. If the lesson is good, the course sells itself.
- Email challenges build a habit of opening your emails, which helps every email after.
- Quizzes feel personal. They work well when the result points to a clear next step, like a call.
- Free AI tools are newer. A small AI that writes a first draft, scores a hook, or builds a plan in your method gives people a real result, and shows how you think.
How to pick one that leads to your paid product
Work backward from what you sell.
- Write down your paid product's promise. For example: "Write a newsletter people pay for."
- List the steps a buyer goes through. Pick a niche, find topics, write the first issue, grow, charge.
- Pick the first step, or the step people get stuck on most. "Find 30 topics you can write about" is a good one.
- Pick the format that gets them that result fastest. Here, a topic template or a small AI that suggests topics.
Now the lead magnet gives a real win, and the next step is naturally your paid product. The reader thinks "that worked, what's next?" and you have the answer.
A good test: if someone loves your lead magnet, would they want your paid product more, or less? If the free thing solves the whole problem, they won't need to buy. Give away the first step, not the whole staircase.
How to build a lead magnet in a weekend
Saturday morning: pick and outline. Choose one idea from the table. Write the title as a promise: "The 20-minute content calendar for busy coaches." Outline it in five to ten points.
Saturday afternoon: make it. Use what you already have. Your best post, your own template, a lesson you already teach. Keep it short. Most lead magnets are too long, and people never finish them.
Sunday morning: test it. Send it to three people who fit your audience. Watch where they get stuck. Fix that.
Sunday afternoon: set up the page and delivery. Build the opt-in page, connect it to your email tool, and write your first three follow-up emails (more below).
Good enough and live beats perfect and in a folder. You can improve it after you see how many people sign up.
The opt-in page
The page where people sign up does one job: get the email.
- Headline: the result, not the format. "Plan a month of posts in 20 minutes," not "Free content calendar PDF."
- Two or three bullets on what's inside.
- An image or preview so they can see it's real.
- One field: email. A first name is fine if you use it. More fields cost signups.
- A clear button: "Send me the template" beats "Submit."
- A bit of proof if you have it: a short quote, or how many people use it.
For where to put this page and how to send traffic to it from your link in bio, see how to grow your email list from your link in bio.
Delivery: get it to them right away
People are most interested in the minute they sign up. Don't make them wait.
- Show it on screen after signup, and also email it. Some people close the tab.
- Put it somewhere they can come back to. A link that works in a year is better than an attachment that gets lost.
- Use a clear sender name and subject. "Your content calendar is here" gets opened.
The follow-up that turns it into sales
A lead magnet with no follow-up is a list of people who forget you. Set up a short welcome sequence in your email tool before you launch:
| When | What it does | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Right away | Delivers the lead magnet and says how to use it in one step |
| 2 | Day 2 | A quick win or story that builds on it |
| 3 | Day 4 | The common mistake people make next, and how to avoid it |
| 4 | Day 6 | Introduces your paid product as the next step, with one link |
| 5 | Day 8 | Answers one objection, shares proof, and repeats the offer |
Keep each email short and about one thing. After the sequence, move people into your regular weekly email.
Two more ways to connect the free thing to the paid one:
- Link to the paid product inside the lead magnet itself. At the end of the checklist: "Want the full system? Here's the course."
- Make an offer only for new subscribers. A small discount or a bonus that ends in a few days gives people a reason to decide.
How to do it with Eden
On Eden, a lead magnet is a free product in your store. See the full tour on the Eden store page.
- Make a $0 product. In Your store → Products, click New product, pick a type (a download, a course with one lesson, or a Custom AI), and set the price to 0 on the Offer step. The button reads "Get it free." Free products need no Stripe account.
- Send claims to your email list. In Your store → Integrations, connect Kit, beehiiv, or GoHighLevel and tick Free claims. Substack is supported too: new signups are added through Eden's desktop app or Chrome extension. For MailerLite or Mailchimp, send claims through the purchase webhook with Zapier, Make, or n8n. See connect your email list.
- Tag them by product. Turn on Tag each product so people who claimed your checklist get their own tag, and your email tool can start the right welcome sequence.
- Add a newsletter box. The Email capture block on your free link-in-bio page collects signups, and its Send signups to switches pick which lists they go to.
- Put it first. Turn on Start here on the lead magnet's product block, and it becomes the big card at the top of your page. See your creator page.
- Lead to the paid product from inside. In a free course or Custom AI, buyers see your other products at the end of the Knowledge tab and on a next step card. See show your other products.
- Give away an AI. A free Custom AI can include AI credits, paid from your prepaid balance. It's a lead magnet people use again and again. See how to sell a Custom AI.
- Match it to each post. Content links open your page with the right product on top, and Instagram Auto-DMs (Pro plan) can send the free product to everyone who comments a keyword.
Where Eden falls short: Eden doesn't send email sequences yet. Your welcome sequence lives in Kit, beehiiv, GoHighLevel, or Substack. Building the product is free on any plan, but publishing one, even a free one, needs the Starter plan at $29/mo. Eden takes 5% of paid sales.
Frequently asked questions
What is a lead magnet?
A free resource you give in exchange for an email address, like a checklist, template, or short lesson. It should solve one small problem fast and lead to what you sell.
What is the best lead magnet for creators?
The one that is the first step of your paid product. Checklists and templates are the easiest to start with. Free lessons and small AI tools work well if you sell courses or AI products.
How long should a lead magnet be?
Short enough to use in 15 minutes. A one-page checklist that gets used beats a 60-page ebook that doesn't.
Do I need a website to offer a lead magnet?
No. A link-in-bio page with an email box, or a free product page, is enough. Connect it to your email tool so signups get your welcome emails.
How many lead magnets should I have?
Start with one. Once it works, make one for each main product, so each post can point to the free thing that fits it.
